Dear New Leader: 7 Things I Wish Someone Told Me
When I stepped into my first leadership role, I had the title, but not the tools. I thought leadership meant having all the answers, managing every detail, and never showing uncertainty.
I was wrong.
If you're a new leader or stepping into a bigger role, this letter is for you. Here’s what I wish someone had told me at the start.
1. You’re Not Supposed to Know Everything
You were promoted for your potential, not your perfection. You don’t have to know it all. You do have to stay curious, ask questions, and remain open to learning.
2. Your Energy Sets the Tone
The team reads your tone before they read your email. Your stress, calm, presence, or absence all send a message. Be intentional about the energy you bring into the room.
3. Clarity Builds Trust
Vagueness creates confusion. Don’t assume your team knows what you expect. Say it clearly. Define what success looks like. And check for understanding.
4. Listening Is a Leadership Skill
You don’t build influence by talking more. You build it by listening well. Create space for your team to speak, reflect on what you hear, and act on what matters.
5. Feedback Is a Gift—Even When It’s Hard
You will make mistakes. The best leaders learn from them. Create a culture where your team can tell you the truth. Your growth depends on it.
6. Boundaries Are Leadership, Too
You do not have to be available 24/7 to be respected. Protect your time, your energy, and your focus. A burned-out leader cannot model balance.
7. You Get to Lead Your Way
You don’t have to mimic the loudest person in the room. You don’t have to abandon who you are to fit some outdated mold. Lead with your values. Lead with intention. That’s where your power lives.
Mindful Thought
Leadership is not about being the hero. It’s about building a space where others can thrive, and growing into the version of yourself you didn’t know you could be.
If you’re ready to lead with clarity, confidence, and care, let’s talk.
